“Life – they say – is not always a bed of roses. Some are born with a silver spoon. Others don’t have immediate access to the spoon, but can afford what they need. For others still, life is so very difficult” famous lines that helped Richard achieve his dreams.
Richard Jacinto Galano, now aged 23 and a full-time professor at St. Paul University in Tuguegarao City recalled how hardship, sacrifice, patience and tenacity, played a very important role, in his journey to where he is now.
Life then was very difficult, so upon learning of the Special Program of Employment for Students (SPES) of the Department of Labor and Employment – Apayao Field Office, with his persistent determination, he did not waste time and immediately applied knowing that SPES would alleviate his financial burden.
“I know that going to college will be very expensive and my parents will have difficulty in sending me to college, so I took every opportunity to earn money for my tuition and other school fees during semestral breaks and vacations instead of just doing nothing and waiting for the grace to come near me” Mr. Galano recalls.
He was a SPES beneficiary of the Municipal Government of Sta. Marcela, Apayao from 2013 when he was still 4th year high school to 2016 and after his stint in SPES he also availed of the scholarship program of the Provincial Government of Apayao.
Mr. Galano said “SPES taught me to value time. I was able to exercise the virtues of patience and hardwork. SPES tried my resilience to overcome adversities and endurance to hold on tight amidst difficulties. All the positive and negative things that happened to me while with the program honed me to become the better version of myself.”
His sacrifices paid off when he graduated magna cum laude at the Cagayan State University, Andrews campus with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education major in Mathematics in June 2017 and landed 5th place in the September 2017 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) with a rating of 92%.
After his graduation, Mr. Galano was hired as a part-time-teacher from June – August 2017 in his Alma Mater. the Cagayan State University. During breaks and after his work, he started reviewing for the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) and eventually passed the examination with flying colors in September 2017.
A man with passion to fulfill his dreams, he is now pursuing his Master’s Degree in Mathematics.
